Fusion Bellydance ~

This dance style mixes two or more recognizable traditions, themes, costuming, or music used to construct the dance performance. Fusion Bellydance may also be fused with other genres of dance. In today’s modern world, we are more globally influenced. The veiled boundaries between people and ideas are quickly falling away.

Course work consists of Bellydance and music history in the dance genres represented, ancient to modern cultural context, mode of employ/technique, callinetic muscle isolation, Katherine Dunham breathing technique, posture, choreography, flexibility and strength training which includes yoga and many other methods. Empower yourself by learning to Bellydance in a fun and supportive atmosphere. With over a decade of Spiritdancer's curriculum inspiring visual and performing arts creation, Spiritdancer's students glow with confidence, everyone is welcome in class regardless of ability or dance background, etc...!

Spiritdancer teaches as a means of healing in Honolulu, HI and travels to do workshops for the surrounding area.  Classes for children and adults of various levels!

PLEASE PROTECT YOURSELF FROM EXPLOITATION:

FREEDOM POLICY: SPIRITDANZER does not tolerate the precept that any student is a piece of property, either literally or figuratively. We recognize that each pupil is a free entity in this life and veritably free from the manipulation or pressure to pursue education only from SPIRITDANZER. SPIRITDANZER and many other dance studios do business this way, not enforcing fees that produce neglect and control. The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission and many others have been doing so continuously to honor the freedom of choice an individual is entitled to, so that one can grow into the unique and well-rounded artist they aspire to be. Collaborating with other studios and artists within our community has eradicated a lot of the monopoly created by covert dictatorial business practices.

"I have always been a teacher that respects her students' freedom in this Universe and especially in our own country of these United States of America! I continue to encourage all of my students to seek out and to learn from as many artists as possible! It would be selfish of me not to."  ~Spiritdancer

FAIR TRADE/NON SLAVE-WAGE POLICY: Fair trade is a combination of environmental standards with fair labor standards, including the fair wages and working conditions. The result is a higher quality of product and/or service, generally produced in smaller batches that help communities to stimulate their economy and use sustainable and friendly methods. All SPIRITDANZER  art instructors are compensated with a “fair” 50/50 split market price, instead of competitive "slave-wage" prices where an artist can be exploited. All SPIRITDANZER instructors are also Independent Contractors/self-sufficient professional entities and as such are not employees. SPIRITDANZER does not tolerate the practice of unfair and/or illegal labor standards and/or  paying slave type wages or appropriation of more than is fair from the artist(s) producing the service provided.

"Some dance studios hire qualified art instructors as independent service providers and then illegally impose the responsibilities of an employee on the private contractors, while not providing the privileges of one hired as an employee. This is often done to deceive the IRS and to take advantage of those artists who are not aware of their legal rights. Instructors hired under this basis are often coerced to sign contracts that appear to negate their Constitutional Rights and/or the rights of their students. A lot of artists are naive to their rights, and being covertly paid an unfair "slave wage", having a 7o/30 split or more taken from the actual service fee paid for the classes they independently provide. Other Examples: Mandatory hours, given without the prior consultation and/or approval of Independent Contractor, threatening E-mails about keeping relationships with students, etc...instructor not paid if students do not show, even if the teacher was required to show up and be there, artistic and educational freedom of Independent not respected and/or honored,  unpaid Mandatory meetings, run-thrus, rehearsals, unequal work dispursement, Independent Contractors represented falsely as employees and/or vise versa, Independents illegally required to follow other such criteria as set forth in the law for an employee,  and many other such wanton and illegal exploitation..."
SPIRITDANZER is highly proactive in educating the public about such practices, helping to free dancers and other artists from modern day slave labor type practices that subjugate unethically and illegally."~Spiritdancer

SPIRITDANZER classes have...NO membership fee!

Class Levels:
Beginning
Intermediate
Advanced

Beginning level classes are those that are for people who either have never danced before or are still new and learning and becoming comfortable with the movements of the dance. (*Although, even an advanced level dancer can take a beginning level class to work on training muscles callinetically.)

Intermediate level classes cover a wide range. Intermediate level students can keep up with most movement. They understand the movements; but some are still developing the muscles they need for mastery. Intermediate classes are taken up to the advanced level.

Advanced classes are for those students who have, not only attained the dance mentally, but their mode of employ in every aspect is articulate. Advanced students can follow fast and advanced choreo, etc...

**Most students fall into the intermediate category on some level. For example, some may have mastered all of their undulations and internal body movements, but need work on other things like external body movement, stage work, floor pattern movement, levels, props, floorwork, or turns, flexibility etc....

*Class focus changes by the perrogative of Spiritdancer ONLY, this is a Strict Studio/Dojo:

Expanding upon isolations and developing external movement of sharpness -  Jazz...Jazz dance is an art form of movement which showcases a dancer's individual style and uniqueness. (Very important for any Bellydancer, not just the Fusion artist.) Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves and steps in their own way. This genre of dance is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps or jumps,  and rapid turns/spins. To excel in Jazz, dancers need a strong background in Classical Ballet, as it establishes the musculature necessary to execute the movements. The muscle memory required for this is based with the techniques of Classical Ballet. Ballet is simply one way of developing the dancer's musculature. Maybe a bit less frightening to learn the art form of Jazz from a Bellydancer who has also trained in the methods of Giordano, Tremaine, Fosse and others? Spiritdancer has immense respect for Jazz dance, having begun her formal dance training...as a Jazz dancer. Spiritdancer teaches how to distinguish where and how to fuse this technique into your Bellydance.  Adding one more...mastery of movement!

CLASS ETIQUETTE

* Spiritdancer's policies and dress code are to help establish an environment in which the highest quality of teaching and learning can be achieved.

* Please wear clothing that is close-fitting, allows ease of movement and is breathable, for your comfort. Yoga/Jazz pants, and a leotard, tank top or t-shirt are ideal.  (women: for Classical Ballet please wear pink tights and a solid color leotard. Men: yoga pants and a tank or fitted T-shirt and/or classical male attire. Cover-ups are allowed for barre work; but Spiritdancer needs to be able to see the muscle development, so please remove them after warm-up.)

* Spiritdancer highly recommends wearing dance shoes. Bare feet are permissible, but often are harder to work on speed turns with, unless you have built up calluses, and some floorwork requires protecting your feet while learning. Slippers are also necessary for learning the proper technique of Tendu. Ballet slippers, Hermes sandals, dance paws, lyrical sandals and the like are excellent for center work.  Jazz shoes are also great for Bellydance class.

* Spiritdancer asks that her students please strive to treat each other with kindness, patience, supportiveness, and empathy. Spiritdancer teaches to appreciate each dancer’s strengths, and to strive to learn from each artist that you meet, no matter what their level of expertise. There is no need for competition in such and environment. Spiritdancer teaches to share experience, strength, and hope.

* Students are urged to arrive 10-20 minutes prior to class to warm up their own bodies, preparing them for safe movement in class.

* Hair: Please wear hair away from the face so that Spiritdancer can see that the neck muscles are developing properly as a dancer. (Buns for barre-work, not pony tails please.)

Floor Barre/Stretching: Please bring a yoga mat if you have it.

* Please refrain from chewing gum, using your cell phone, and talking to your neighbors during class. Thank you.

* Parents and/or care givers are welcome to stay and view class, understanding that no instruction/comment(s) and/or direction(s) is/are to be given to any student while Spiritdancer is teaching, other than by the instructor herself, or a teacher's assistant. It may seem helpful, but when improper technique is given, it hinders the student ultimately and disturbs the teaching process. Spiritdancer observes and teaches professional dance etiquette.

* No jeans or cropped jean shorts please, these are restrictive for a lot of types of movement. Thank you.

* Performance in and observation of a dance is an essential part of any type of dancer's training. Performance opportunities and viewings of shows and choreography will be offered to students who are interested!

* For those students who perform for Troupe...please no wearing any part of your costume to class, these we reserve for performance Only. When we are at a performance venue, dancers are to have a suitable cover-up that hides most of their costume. It is considered highly impolite to appear in full costume, while not in the throws of performance.

Please continue reading these policies, almost done!

SPIRITDANZER provides a Costume Closet for enrolled students, which helps with needed supplies. Please ask Spiritdancer if you have the need to borrow anything. She likes to provide for her students with anything she able to.

*Please note that taking photographs, audio-recording, and/or videotaping is NOT allowed without prior permission from Spiritdancer, and only under the agreement to provide copies to the teacher!

*** Private and Semi-private Lessons:
Can be done in the privacy of your home or in a dance studio.

Beating your illness and dancing through life…**As with any new form of physical activity, consult a physician before starting a new program. There are dance studios whose highest priority is profit and not safety. Is the floor you are dancing on athletically safe? This is a health issue, that any doctor can assist with.**

SPECIAL  for those who register for a complete month!!!! Join our group on and receive a Discount card!

Hip scarves and other dance attire can be ordered at a low cost from the SPIRITDANZER studio, and other supplies can also be borrowed from the school's Costume Closet!

Spiritdancer kindly asks her students to please review the school's policies, making sure the studio/dojo runs smoothly. Thanks!
